Child support on €1,500 net a month: amount and real cost

Checked by Radif Partners · Editorial policy

On €1,500 net a month, the paying parent has €848 above the table’s subsistence amount. For one child with standard visiting, indicative support is €114 a month, 7.6 % of income; for two children €195. This income level shows a common misunderstanding about tax: support paid is deductible, but in the 11 % band the saving is small, about €151 a year for one child. The real cost of support is almost its face value, unlike for a higher earner. The receiving parent adds the support to their taxable income after an allowance of at least €454. The calculator below shows other configurations. Over a full year, the table means €1,374 for one child and €2,340 for two with standard visiting.

A deduction worth little at this income

With about €18,000 of taxable income on one share, the paying parent is in the 11 % band. Deducting €1,374 of annual support saves about €151: the real cost of support is €1,223 over the year. For the same amount, a parent in the 30% band would save nearly three times as much. Worth remembering in a negotiation: one euro of support does not cost everyone the same.

For the parent receiving support

Support received is taxable: €1,374 a year, less the 10% allowance raised here to its minimum of €454, leaves €920 added to taxable income. For a single parent, whose household gets extra tax shares for the child, the effect on tax is often nil or small. Support of €114 per child is still below the ASF here, so a single parent can claim the difference from the CAF.

These are the Ministry of Justice table amounts; a judge can depart from them depending on the child’s needs and each parent’s costs. The full calculator adds the ASF and the tax effect for your exact situation.

Frequently asked questions

How much support for one child on a €1,500 net salary?

The Ministry of Justice reference table gives €114 a month with standard visiting, €153 with reduced visiting and €76 with shared residence. The sum is (1,500 − €652) × the column’s rate. The judge can still adjust it to the child’s actual needs.

On €1,500, what does support really cost after tax?

Almost its face value: in the 11 % band, deducting support cuts tax by about €151 a year for one child with standard visiting, a real cost of €1,223 over the year. This assumes one tax share and no décote (the low-income reduction): a different household will get a slightly different figure.

On €1,500 with three children, what does the table give?

For three children with standard visiting, the table applies 10.0 % per child to income above the subsistence amount: €85 each, €254 in total. The paying parent would keep €1,246 for housing and living costs, which a judge will weigh against their real expenses.
