Child support for one child in France: the amount by the paying parent’s income

One child is the case where the table’s per-child rate is highest.

Checked by Radif Partners · Editorial policy

For an only child, the French Ministry of Justice table applies its highest rates: 18.0 % of income above the subsistence amount with reduced visiting, 13.5 % with standard visiting, 9.0 % with shared residence. The reason is simple: all the household costs of the home the child lives in (a bedroom, a bigger flat, sometimes a car) are carried for a single child. On €1,800 net with standard visiting, indicative support is €155 a month; on €3,000, €317. These are benchmarks: the judge also considers the child’s age and specific costs such as a nursery or orthodontic treatment. In French paperwork the arrangement is written as “contribution à l’entretien et à l’éducation de l’enfant”. The calculator below gives the figure for your income.

What an only child changes compared with siblings

The per-child rate falls with each extra child: 13.5 % for one child, 11.5 % for each of two. Adding a second child to the same case does not double support: on €2,400 it goes from €236 to €402. Conversely, when the eldest becomes self-supporting and support only covers a younger sibling, the per-child rate goes back up: a frequent ground for a review, worth calculating before writing to the judge.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average child support for one child in France?

The Ministry of Justice does not publish an average: its table gives an amount for each income band, so the figure depends first on the paying parent’s income. As a guide, with standard visiting the table gives €114 on €1,500, €249 on €2,500 and €452 on €4,000, before any adjustment by the judge.

Can support for an only child be higher than the table?

Yes. The table is guidance and the judge looks at the child’s real needs: medical costs not reimbursed, private schooling, sport at a high level. The judge can then set more, or add to the monthly amount the direct payment of certain costs, which service-public.fr lists among the possible forms of the contribution.

What happens to support when an only child goes to boarding school?

Nothing automatically: the amount stays as decided. If boarding shifts costs for good, for example when the paying parent also pays the boarding fees, the parents can agree a new split in an approved agreement, or one of them can apply to the family judge relying on that new fact.
