Child support on €4,000 net a month: after a pay rise

Checked by Radif Partners · Editorial policy

A net income of €4,000 often follows a promotion or a new job, and raises a specific question: can the receiving parent ask for more? Yes, if the rise is new since the last decision; it is one of the accepted grounds for a review. According to the Ministry of Justice table, a parent who paid €317 for one child with standard visiting when earning €3,000 would pay €452 on €4,000, €135 more a month. For two children support goes from €540 to €770. The change is not automatic: it needs an approved agreement or a judge’s decision, plus proof of the new income. The calculator below gives the figures at €4,000. Over a full year, the table means €5,424 for one child and €9,240 for two with standard visiting.

Asking for an increase

The receiving parent must show that the other parent’s resources have risen since the last decision. A tax notice, if available, or any evidence about the new job serves as proof. They apply to the family court judge (JAF), with no lawyer required, using the application form and a calculation of the table at both incomes. The judge also looks at the child’s needs, which have often grown in the meantime.

On €4,000: support and tax

On €4,000 net, about €48,000 of taxable income, the paying parent is in the 30 % band. Deducting €5,424 of annual support for a minor child saves about €1,627. The €135 monthly increase in support therefore really costs only about €95.

These are the Ministry of Justice table amounts; a judge can depart from them depending on the child’s needs and each parent’s costs. The full calculator adds the ASF and the tax effect for your exact situation.

Frequently asked questions

How much support for one child on a €4,000 net salary?

The Ministry of Justice table gives €452 a month with standard visiting, €603 with reduced visiting and €301 with shared residence. The sum is (4,000 − €652) × the column’s per-child rate. The judge can adjust for needs and costs.

The other parent got a pay rise: does support go up by itself?

No. Only the annual indexation to the price index applies without a judge. An increase based on income requires a review: a new approved agreement or a decision of the family court judge, applied for by the receiving parent with proof of the rise. The new amount applies from the date the judge sets.

Can I ask for a review without knowing the new salary?

Yes. The parent asking for the review presents what they know (new job, lifestyle) and sets out the child’s needs. If the other parent’s income is unknown, the judge can set support at the amount requested, or reduce it if it seems out of proportion. At the hearing each parent has to produce evidence of income.
