Child support on €1,800 net a month: where the ASF drops away

Checked by Radif Partners · Editorial policy

On €1,800 net a month, support for an only child crosses a small but real line. With reduced visiting rights the Ministry of Justice table gives €207 a month, slightly more than the family support allowance (€201), which therefore can no longer top it up. The switch happens from €1,768 of income. With standard visiting, support stays at €155, still under the ASF, so a single parent can still receive the difference, €46 a month. The same income gives two different budgets for the parent raising the child, depending on how much visiting time the other parent has. This is one of the cases where describing the visiting arrangement accurately really matters. The calculator below compares the three columns. Over a full year, the table means €1,860 for one child and €3,168 for two with standard visiting.

Reduced or standard visiting: same income, two budgets

With reduced visiting, the receiving parent gets €207 and no ASF. With standard visiting they get €155 of support plus €46 of top-up ASF if living alone, €201 in all. Oddly, the standard arrangement leaves them slightly more, because the CAF fills the gap. That only holds while standard-column support stays under the ASF, up to €2,140 of the paying parent’s income.

Two children on €1,800

With two children the per-child rate falls and each child’s support drops back under the ASF even with reduced visiting: €178 per child, €132 with standard visiting. For siblings, the ASF line sits much higher. The paying parent pays €264 with standard visiting and can deduct it from taxable income.

These are the Ministry of Justice table amounts; a judge can depart from them depending on the child’s needs and each parent’s costs. The full calculator adds the ASF and the tax effect for your exact situation.

Frequently asked questions

At what income does child support exceed the ASF?

For an only child, from €1,768 of the paying parent’s net income with reduced visiting, and from €2,140 with standard visiting, using the subsistence amount of €652 and the ASF of €201. Below those figures a single receiving parent can claim the top-up ASF from the CAF.

On €1,800, how much for one child with reduced visiting?

The table gives €207 a month: (1,800 − €652) × 18.0 %. According to justice.fr, reduced visiting means less contact than every other weekend, for example single days or supervised visits, where the paying parent carries few direct costs. The figure is a benchmark the judge can adjust.

Does the receiving parent lose the ASF if support goes up?

The top-up ASF shrinks as support rises and disappears once support reaches €201 per child; if the gap is below €15, nothing is paid. So raising support does not always raise what a single parent receives in total, as long as support stays below the ASF.
