Child support for four, five or six children in France

Beyond three children the table carries on up to six, with lower and lower per-child rates.

Checked by Radif Partners · Editorial policy

The French Ministry of Justice table covers families of up to six children. With standard visiting, the per-child rate is 8.8 % for four children, 8.0 % for five and 7.2 % for six. The total keeps rising: 35.2%, 40% then 43.2% of income above the subsistence amount. On €3,000 net with four children, indicative support is €826 a month. At these levels the subsistence amount of €652 is often the paying parent’s only real protection, and the judge looks closely at what they have left. Beyond six children the table stops: our tool then keeps the six-child rate, a simple calculation convention. For large families the judge’s own assessment counts more than ever. The calculator below works for four to six children.

The limits of the table for large families

The bigger the family, the further the table drifts from real budgets: it sees neither the higher family benefits received by the parent raising the children nor the cost of a four-bedroom home. A decision for a large family can therefore depart from the scale, and negotiation between parents is better grounded in each home’s actual budget. The calculator compares the three visiting columns; how judges decide lists what justifies a departure.

Frequently asked questions

What is the table rate for six children?

For six children the table uses 9.5 % per child with reduced visiting, 7.2 % with standard visiting and 4.8 % with shared residence, applied to the paying parent’s income minus the subsistence amount. In total, with standard visiting, support is 43.2% of that disposable income, leaving the paying parent a little over half of what exceeds the subsistence amount.

Can support for four children push the parent below the RSA?

In principle no: the table first deducts a subsistence amount equal to the single-person RSA, and support only applies to the rest. But that amount ignores rent and other costs, so a parent can be left with very little once housing is paid. That is an argument to put to the judge, with evidence, to obtain less than the table.

With seven or more children, what does a French judge do?

The table stops at six children, so there is no official rate beyond. The judge sets the contribution from the children’s needs and each parent’s resources, without a grid. Our calculator applies the six-child rate to each child, which gives an order of magnitude, not a rule.
